Our Story: A Legacy of Care
For over four decades, Westgate Aged Care has been a trusted part of the Newport community. Established in its current location in 1981, Westgate—formerly known as Westgate Private Nursing Home—has continued to evolve while staying true to its core mission: providing compassionate, high-quality aged care in a welcoming and respectful environment.
Over the decades, it has grown not only in size but also in reputation—transforming into a modern 90-bed residence that blends clinical excellence with warmth and dignity. Every corner of Westgate reflects a deep-rooted philosophy: that aged care should go beyond basic needs and offer a true sense of belonging, comfort, and purpose to each resident.
The journey of Westgate Aged Care is deeply connected to the vision and commitment of Joe and Ann Alexander, who have now dedicated 36 years to the aged care industry. In 1989, they began their work in the sector, and in 1994, they recognised the potential at Westgate to raise the standard of care for elderly residents. Their combined expertise, especially Ann’s deep clinical background—spanning roles at the Royal Children’s Hospital, PANCH (now Northern Hospital), Repatriation Hospital (now Austin), and rural nursing in Shepparton—brought a transformative focus to Westgate’s care philosophy.
Having migrated from Kerala in South India over five decades ago, Joe and Ann carry with them a cultural legacy rooted in deep respect for elders. This value continues to shape the ethos of Westgate Aged Care, where every resident is treated with dignity, warmth, and compassion. Their dedication to maintaining a “home away from home” for residents is consistently reflected in positive feedback and Accreditation outcomes from the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.
As the aged care landscape evolved, Westgate remained a family-run service. Joe and Ann’s sons, Jayson and David, have since joined the leadership, helping carry forward their parents’ mission with renewed energy and innovation. In 2013, the facility expanded with the addition of 30 premium private suites and lounge areas, now known as the Banksia and Daffodil Wings, ensuring residents enjoy comfort, privacy, and community in equal measure.

THE BEGINNINGS
OurHistory
Originally migrating from Kerala in India’s south some 50 years ago, both Joe and Ann bring with them a culture imbedded with the DNA of respecting and caring for our elderly with the utmost respect. It is this same care and respect that drives the culture of Westgate Aged Care and its staff to provide a high quality home away from home for our valued elderly clients. This same high level of quality of care is often noted in Accreditation visits by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.

In 1994, Joe and Ann saw an opportunity at Westgate Aged Care to vastly improve upon the quality of care offered to the elderly in Aged Care benefitting from Ann’s considerable knowledge and experience of nearly 25 years of nursing clinical care including many years worked at, regional nursing in the Shepparton area, Royal Children’s Hospital, PANCH (now Northern Hospital), Repatriation Hospital (now Austin Hospital).

Over the years, as the business has developed and the industry changed, Westgate Aged Care has evolved into a family business, now including Jayson and David, their sons. Joe and Ann decided to concentrate their efforts into Westgate Aged Care and 2013 a significant extension of 30 premium private suites and lounges was completed which house the Banksia and Daffodil wings.

2025 marks 36 years of successfully operating in the Aged Care Industry for Joe and Ann Alexander.
